Meaning and Background
"I came into the writing session with Liz Rose and said...I've got this idea. I had overheard a friend of mine talking to his girlfriend and he was completely on the defensive saying, "No, baby...I had to get off the phone really quickly...I tried to call you right back...Of course I love you. More than anything! Baby, I'm so sorry." She was just yelling at him! I felt so bad for him at that moment. So I came up with the first line "You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset, going off about something that you said," and I ran that into the story line that I'm in love with him and he should be with me instead of her. It just became this whole picture. It was really fun for us to write the line, "She wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts.""- Taylor about You Belong with Me
- The lyrics "I'm in the room" was changed in Taylor's Version to "I'm in my room".
The video was released on May 2, 2009. It was directed by Roman White. Taylor's love interest is played by actor Lucas Till.
The video starts out with Taylor watching her neighbour arguing with his girlfriend on the phone in his room. She holds a sign while standing behind her own window, asking if he's okay. He smiles at her and holds a sign that says "Tired of drama", to which Taylor responds with a sign saying "Sorry :(". The guy closes his curtains, just as Taylor was about to show him a sign that says "I love you". Next, Taylor is seen dancing in the mirror and trying on different outfits. She then dances through her room and sings while holding her hairbrush as a microphone. The neighbour peeks through the curtains and laughs seeing her dance. Next, Taylor is sitting on a bench and reading a book when the guy joins her. He touches her hair and they have a fun conversation. The guy's girlfriend (played by Taylor with a brown wig) arrives in her car and the guy gets in. Brunette Taylor kisses him and glares at blonde Taylor. Next, brunette Taylor is seen cheerleading during a football game the guy plays in, while Taylor is in the school band. The school's team wins and the guy runs towards his girlfriend; he catches her flirting with a teammate. The get into an argument and the guy ends up leaving. The next scene shows the guy back in his room, dressing up for prom. He asks Taylor if she's coming, but Taylor shows him a sign that says "No, studying". The guy replies: "Wish you were" and leaves the room. Taylor looks at the "I love you" sign and takes off her glasses. She goes to prom in a white dress with her hair down. Many students stare at her and also the guy notices her. They walk towards each other, but brunette Taylor tries to stop him. He ignores her and she looks offended. Taylor shows him the "I love you" sign and he reveals that he also has an "I love you" sign for her. The video ends with Taylor singing the last line, "You belong with me", and a kiss.
