Teardrops on My Guitar is the third track and second single of Taylor's debut album Taylor Swift. It was released on October 24, 2006 and became a single on February 19, 2007.
Meaning and Background
"I used to have a huge crush on this guy, who would sit there every day talking to me about... another girl: how beautiful she was, how nice and smart and perfect she was. And I sat there and listened, never meaning it any of the times I said 'Oh, I'm so happy for you.' I guess this is a good example of how I let my feelings out in songs, and sometimes no other way. And I've never been afraid of using names. I love this song because of its honesty and vulnerability. To this day, they are still together and he has no idea about this song."- Taylor about Teardrops on My Guitar
The guy she sings about is Drew Hardwick, who was a classmate of hers.
The music video was released on February 19, 2007. It's directed by Trey Fanjoy. Taylor's love interest is played by Tyler Hilton.
The video starts in a high school with Taylor and a guy having a conversation at their lockers. He asks her if she's gonna come to the game on Friday and Taylor replies "Well, I was thinking about it. Why?". He tells her that he was just asking and reveals that he met a girl that he's gonna tell her about later. Taylor looks sad as the guy revealed he met a girl. In the next scene, Taylor is lying on her bed with her guitar, singing the song. It plays between the scenes of Taylor and the guy. The video transitions to Taylor and the guy talking and laughing in the school library and them getting told to be quiet by a librarian. Next, they're in science class. Taylor messes up and spills substance because she was looking at the guy. They clean it up together. In the school's hallway, Taylor sees the guy. However, he walks right past her towards his girlfriend. As they kiss, Taylor walks away.
