Delicate is the fifth track and fourth single of Taylor Swift's sixth album reputation. It was released on November 10, 2017.
Meaning and Background
“Delicate is a song about the vulnerability that immediately surfaces in all of us the minute we meet someone we want to like us. We think about everything they might’ve heard about us, every reason they wouldn’t want us. Every step forward toward that other person scares us, but it thrills us too. Delicate is about the balancing act of the rush and the fear, and hoping it’s really worth it to take that chance.”Taylor about Delicate
The song was written when Taylor was in a low, vulnerable place.
- During live performances of Delicate, fans often scream "1, 2, 3, let’s go bitch!" between the pre-chorus and chorus.
The music video was released on March 11, 2020 at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards. The video was directed by Joseph Kahn.
The video starts out with Taylor at a red carpet, looking sad as she's getting photographed by interviewed. Someone gives her a piece of paper. Next, she walks through a hotel lobby with her bodyguards as everyone moves out of the way and looks at her. She takes photos with some fans when someone grabs her. Her security drags him away and makes Taylor leave. Taylor starts to test out how the security mimics her. In her dressing room, she looks into the mirror and makes a few silly faces. She stops when a group women walk in. As she stands up, the piece of paper is on the counter. She doesn't see herself in the mirror anymore and the group of women doesn't see her either; she realizes she's invisible. She finds out that nobody can see her anymore. She's really excited about it and joyfully starts to dance through the hotel. In between, she tries to talk to a woman, but isn't able to because the woman can't see her. Taylor is saddened by this. Taylor continues to dance outside in the pouring rain. She then arrives at a bar and opens the note. Now, everyone can see her again. She looks around, recognizes someone (presumably her lover) and smiles, finding happiness.
- In the subway station, 'track 5' is graffied on a wall. Delicate is the fifth track of Reputation. The lyrics 'Echoes of your footsteps' can also be seen on the walls.
- Taylor is wearing a snake ring in the video (snakes can be seen all through reputation).
- The rain scene references to Fearless' lyrics "I don't know why but with you I'd dance / In a storm in my best dress".
